In Support of Smith Entrepreneurs

Late last month, Rebecca Freeman ’09 and Camaren Subhiyah ’07 took home cash prizes after displaying their business concepts to local bankers and a live audience at the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s fourth annual Entrepreneurship Banquet.

The event took place April 25 at the Log Cabin in Holyoke, Mass. The Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation provides philanthropic support, primarily in western Massachusetts, with the mission of encouraging young people to reach their leadership and entrepreneurial potential, rewarding excellent education, and promoting literacy and early childhood education.

Freeman, who won the annual Smith College Elevator Pitch Contest in March, joined 14 other students from the region in delivering a 90-second pitch of her business idea in a convincing way at the banquet. She won third place and a check for $500.

Freeman’s product, SipSafe, will protect tourists against water-borne diseases by using a water-purifying straw. Freeman’s idea adapts a purifying straw already on the market into a smaller, travel-friendly size.

Meanwhile, Subhiyah also took two $500 prizes in support of her company ColorSmitten, which will offer high-residue glossy color posters that highlight the Smith College campus.

Subhiyah joined 40 students from 13 area colleges in displaying her products at the banquet. Local bankers who attended the event gave cash prizes to support four of the displayed products. Subhiyah hopes to have the posters available for purchase on campus during commencement and reunion this year.
