Smith College Libraries Update

Issue 1, Fall 2016

Looking Forward

Neilson will close for construction in the summer of 2017 until the completion of the project - expected in 2020. Most of Neilson's collections will be housed in a soon-to-be-built Five College Library Annex in nearby Hatfield for the duration of the project. Books will be brought to campus as requested throughout the construction period. The Young Science Library will become the interim hub for library services and Special Collections. Library resources and services are also provided at Hillyer Art Library and Josten Library for the Performing Arts. For more detail about Library access and services during construction, please see Neilson Project Timeline: Library Services.

Program Summary

Program Summary: Redesign of the Neilson Library Complex (April 18, 2016)

The Program Committee has completed its work and issued its Program Summary. This program provides a framework and direction for the design of The New Neilson Library. The document summarizes the vision, guiding principles and themes, and components of the program as developed by the Program Committee in 2015 and 2016 with wide ranging input from the campus community. The program envisions a sustainably designed library of the twenty-first century that makes intellectual activity visible in formal and informal exhibit areas that spotlight experimentation and innovation as well as celebrating traditional scholarship.
