There is frequently confusion about the roles
of the different deans at Smith. What do they all do? Which dean should you see?
What's the difference between the dean of the college and the dean of students?
The dean of the college oversees all the administrative
offices that have direct influence on students' lives, including the offices of the class
deans, dean of students, student affairs and
residential life, international study, financial
aid and admission, the Ada
Comstock Scholars Program, the registrar's
office, health services and the counseling
service, and the chapel. Together
we review campus issues, consult with students, implement policies and provide support
to help students navigate their undergraduate careers productively and successfully.
The class
deans are concerned with students' academic success and are familiar
with the concerns and issues particular to their class and with academic policy
in general. Class deans can advocate for you in the event you hit some bumps
along the way, so it's a great idea to get to know your class dean -- even if
you haven't experienced any bumps yet.
The dean
of students works to implement policies and initiate programming
to encourage successful transition to residential life and ensure the continued
well-being of students in their residential and co-curricular life.
The associate
dean of international study works with students interested in studying
abroad.
The associate
dean for international students provides support and programming
for international students studying at Smith and is knowledgeable of legalities
and intricacies involved with being an international student.
