Praxis pays stipends to students with qualified, unpaid internships. Stipend recipients must work a minimum of 220 hours.
- Domestic Internships (in one's home country): $2400
- International Internships (non-US and NOT in one's home country): $3500
If you will be paid a salary for your internship that is less than your grant award, you have the option of applying for reduced Praxis funding to supplement your employer–paid salary. The total amount of your employer–paid salary plus Praxis funding may not exceed your Praxis grant award amount, and you will not be eligible for any additional Praxis funds in the future.
If you are receiving need–based grant aid from Smith you will still be responsible for your Summer Income Contribution to the College, if you have one.
As a Praxis funding recipient, you may be eligible to receive a loan of $1,000 to be used solely for the purpose of reducing your Summer Income Contribution. To find out if you have eligibility for the loan, you can contact the . You may be asked to submit a budget of your expenses related to your internship.
If you are eligible and accept the College loan, it will be shown in your official financial aid award letter, and will be added to your current loan portfolio. The loan must be repaid over ten years after graduation at prevailing rates in the same manner as other college loans, and is interest free as long as you are enrolled at least half time in college or graduate school.
If you have questions about the loan or about your normally expected Summer Income Contribution, contact Student Financial Services at 585–2539 or .
If you are an international student, taxes will be withheld from your Praxis payments. Exceptions are made, however, for international students whose home countries maintain tax treaties for scholarships with the United States. If your country maintains such a treaty you may receive a tax waiver for your Praxis stipend by filing the required forms. Please contact the to find out your country's tax treaty status and to obtain forms.
