Job Search and Recruiting Programs

The Lazarus Center for Career Development helps students and young alumnae connect with employers who currently have full-time job opportunities and internships. Graduating students may review available job opportunities, research participating organizations' websites, submit resumes, and sign up for interviews. Over 83 employers participated in on-campus and off-campus recruiting programs in 2007-2008, visiting the CDO throughout the year to conduct over 200 interviews with students for full-time employment after graduation. Also during 07-08, more than 30 employers participated in on-campus recruiting for internships.

Employers also have the option to conduct interviews at their own workplaces; the Lazarus Center collects student resumes for these employers. This service provides targeted recruitment efforts and acts as the initial contact point by advertising positions for employers and compiling student resumes.

Many employers hold late afternoon and early evening information sessions on campus; these programs provide students with information about employers in an informal setting before the interview process begins. Schedules of upcoming sessions are available on the E-Access.

Campus Recruiting
Working with our on-campus recruiting program should be a small part of your job search strategy, since most employers do not have an organized recruiting program. While the Lazarus Center invites organizations from various career fields to interview Smith seniors, employers choose their own recruiting strategy in terms of campus visits. Most companies who do come to campus usually pre-screen the resumes of students, although some have an open sign-up schedule. On-campus recruiting occurs in both the fall and spring semesters; be sure to check schedules frequently.

Interview Cancellation Policy
Once you are on an interviewer's schedule, you have made a commitment to meet with that employer. If you are unable to keep a scheduled appointment, you owe the recruiter and the college the courtesy of canceling with a minimum of 24 hours notice. In the event that you are ill or an emergency occurs, PLEASE contact us (X2579) no later than 8:30 AM on the morning of the interview. Another student on the waiting list may then have an opportunity to interview with the recruiter.

Occasionally students have not appeared for scheduled interviews, an embarrassing situation for everyone. In the event that you do not appear for your interview at the scheduled time without canceling, you will forfeit all privileges of participating in the recruiting program

On occasion, employers cancel a recruiting date without rescheduling. If our staff cannot persuade them to reschedule, we will automatically forward to them the resumes of those students who had expressed an interest in interviewing with them. We suggest you follow-up with a letter reiterating your interest in the position.

PROFESSIONALISM IN THE JOB SEARCH
Students are responsible for accurate representation of their academic records and experiences on their resumes and in an interview. The Lazarus Center for Career Development cannot knowingly send out incorrect information.

Candidates should sign up for interviews only when genuinely interested in the position. Interviewing "for practice" takes advantage of recruiters and limits opportunities for other students who may be sincerely interested in the opportunities being offered. It also alienates the employer.

Second interviews are usually held at the organization's home office; travel expenses are often paid by the organization. When invited for a second interview, candidates should discuss which costs the organization will cover. Typically, reimbursements are limited to travel, automobile rental (if required), room accommodations, and meals.

An accepted offer is a contractual agreement that is expected to be honored. After accepting an offer, candidates should withdraw from the interviewing process and notify other organizations with offers pending.

Five College Recruiting
A consortium with career offices from the other four colleges in the Pioneer Valley makes it possible for you to interview with organizations at any of the five college campuses. Visits by companies that choose to be part of this program will be advertised as part of the Smith recruiting program, but your interview may take place on one of the other campuses, and students from other campuses may interview here. Because this involves a unique degree of cooperation among five colleges, we expect that students applying to interview at other campuses will do so only if they are quite serious about the company and intend to keep their scheduled appointments.

Resume Referral
Employers often send us job descriptions and ask us to forward resumes and cover letters from interested students. The Lazarus Center advertises the positions, collects resumes and covers letters, and forwards them to the organization. Employers review the submissions, decide whom they want to interview, and contact students directly to set up interviews. These interviews are typically at the employer's office. The responsibility and cost of getting to the site usually rests with the students. All resume referral positions are advertised on E-Access.

Off-Campus Recruiting Fairs
To help introduce students to a larger and more varied employer base, the Lazarus Center offers off-campus recruiting fairs. Many organizations that can't visit colleges will participate in our events. The Lazarus Center for Career Development is a member of several recruiting alliances with other colleges and universities. These affiliations are based either on geography or field of interest.
