Certification for Public School Teachers

State-by-State Certification Requirements – Links to state departments of education provided by the US Department of Education.

Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) – Required for certification in Massachusetts.

National Association of State Boards of Education – Links to websites of state departments of education.

National Center for Alternative Certification – Includes state-by-state links describing alternative routes to public school certification such as the Massachusetts Institute for New Teachers (MINT) program.

Praxis Series – Educational tests used by certain states as part of their teaching licensing certification process. Praxis I measures basic academic skills; Praxis II measures general and subject-specific knowledge and teaching skills.

Massachusetts Educational Recruiting Consortium (MERC) Job Fair – Major teaching job fair held each April in Boston for member schools (Smith is one).

National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) – Includes interstate reciprocity agreement information.

National Center for Education Statistics – NCES, located within the US Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences, is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education.  Search for public and private schools, colleges, and libraries in your target region using the Global Locator.

nemnet.com - A national resource organization committed to assisting schools and organizations in the identification and recruitment of minority students and professionals.

New Teachers Collaborative – Work and learn in small public schools in central Massachusetts or southern New Hampshire guided by the principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools. Program offers a year-long path to teach certification; a stimulating peer group; professional collaboration; coaching and mentoring; and a $15,000 stipend with benefits.

NewsVoyager – Teaching jobs are often listed in newspaper classified ads.  Find the website of just about any paper, anywhere! 

Project Connect – Year-round vacancy listing service hosted by the University of Wisconsin (username: teacher; password: aswan).

SchoolSpring – A free job board widely used by public school systems.

Teach For America – Two-year program for graduates of all majors to make a difference in under-resourced urban and rural public schools.

Teacher Magazine – Online ‘zine geared to public school teachers.
