On Saturday, October 20, 2001, students, families, staff, alumnae, and faculty from the Five Colleges joined members of the WITI team to officially launch the WITI Invent Center at Smith College. The Center, located in newly renovated facilities in Tilly Hall, is the first of what WITI hopes will be a network of college and university-based centers designed to advance women's participation in the technological economy.

A ribbon cutting ceremony and a short program with remarks by John Connolly, acting president of Smith College, Carolyn Leighton, CEO of WITI, and Veronica Boaz, vice president of WITI leadership Xcellence, was followed by a reception for Smith students and parents who were on campus attending family weekend. Nancy Hellman, the consulting director for the new center, answered questions about the services that WITI will provide, including internships and mentoring programs; leadership assessment, training and coaching; real-world
work experiences for undergraduates; and resources and connections for faculty, alumnae, and entrepreneurs.
