Smith to Honor Beloved Athlete, Inspiration to Many

Marly Pineda ’08—always ready with a smile. Read comments by some of her swimming students and friends.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—Smith will host a ceremony remembering, celebrating and honoring Marly Pineda ’08 (M.S. 2010) on Sunday, Sept. 12, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the Campus Center Carroll Room.

Pineda, a standout member of the swimming and diving team at Smith, died in a bicycle accident in Boston in early August.

Pineda served as swim team assistant coach for the past two years while earning her master’s degree in exercise and sport studies. In addition, she was the master’s swimming coach at Smith and taught and coached many child and adult swimmers locally. Pineda had just started a new position this summer as head master’s swimming coach of Cambridge, and served as a volunteer assistant swimming coach at Harvard University.

Pineda is remembered fondly by those who knew her at Smith. (Read comments by her former Smith swimming students and friends.)

“Marly was a tremendous person and coach, who cared about helping people learn how to swim with more ease and improve their competitive performance,” said Kim Bierwert, head coach of swimming and diving, who worked closely with Pineda for the six years she attended Smith.

The ceremony honoring Pineda will allow opportunities for attendees to share thoughts about her. Refreshments will be served.
