Celebrating
Hispanic Heritage at Smith, Nationally
This
week marks the end of National Hispanic Heritage Month, an
annual celebration, from September 15 to October 15, of the
contributions of Hispanic Americans to the culture and history
of the Americas.
 Nosotras, the Smith student
Latina/o organization, culminates its celebration of Hispanic
Heritage Month with Taste of Latin America, an annual smorgasbord
of delectable dishes and musica caliente on Saturday, Oct.
16, from 5 to 11 p.m. in Davis Ballroom.
The event is an annual fundraiser
for Nosotras; admission is $5 for all. Proceeds will support
the purchase of books for a third-grade classroom in Miami,
taught by Stacy Diaz ’10.
Celebrating their Hispanic heritage
is a natural and welcomed pastime for student members of
Nosotras.
“My Hispanic heritage is what makes me an individual,” says Tatiana Acavedo ’11. “Being
Hispanic affects my entire outlook toward life, my goals, other people, and growing
up here in the U.S.”
“My Dominican heritage plays an essential role in shaping my views about myself,
society and the world,” echoes Katherine Lebron ’12. “I am a proud Latina and
my rich heritage has helped me to appreciate the traditions and my roots back
in Dominican Republic, while I implement these to form my own traditions here
in the U.S.”
Earlier in the month-long celebration,
the student organization held a party, called Mala Conducta,
to raise funds for A Mother’s Wish Foundation, an organization
in Santiago, Dominican Republic, which provides health care for those in need
in that country. Nosotras also teamed with the Student Event Committee in hosting
Latino comedian Bill Santiago earlier this month. |
