Junior Awarded Hollings Scholarship
Alexandra Page ’12, a chemistry
major, is one of just 130 sophomores nationwide to receive
the 2010 Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship from the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Hollings Scholars
are selected on the basis of academic merit. More than1,200
students were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities throughout
the country.

In addition to the two-year
academic scholarship, the Hollings Scholarship Program provides
a 10-week, full-time, all-expenses paid internship position
during the summer between junior and senior year at a NOAA
facility. The internship provides the scholars with hands-on
educational training experience in NOAA-related science,
research, technology, policy, management, and education activities.
Awards also include travel funds to attend a Hollings Scholarship
Program orientation in Washington, D.C., as well as conferences
where students present research papers at the conclusion
of their internship.
At Smith, Page has researched
marine protected areas for Paulette Peckol, professor of
biological sciences, and will be working in the lab of Kevin
Shea, associate professor of chemistry, working on organic
synthesis. This summer, she is interning for Duke University
Professor Zachary Johnson, whose research focuses on algae
bio-fuels. In her upcoming junior year, she will spend her
second semester in Ecuador studying comparative ecology and
conservation.
The Hollings Scholarship program
is designed to increase undergraduate training in oceanic
and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education
and to foster multidisciplinary training opportunities. Additionally,
its goal is to increase public understanding and support
for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental
literacy. The scholarship program honors retiring Senator
Ernest F. Hollings ((D), South Carolina.
Page, who is from
Brookline, Mass., is a member of Smith’s
varsity swim and lacrosse teams, and is a dancer in the Celebrations Dance Company.
She has been a STRIDE Fellow and has received the New England Men’s and Women’s
Athletic Conference all-conference academic student-athlete award .
