UPDATE YOUR WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM

Use Windows Update to keep your Windows computer operating system up-to-date with all the latest security patches, bug fixes. Keeping your system current protects your computer, data and the network from malware and attacks.

The ITS computer image sets up Windows Update to automatically check for and prompt you to install updates. Make sure to install updates when prompted to do so as they are critical for computer security.

Manually Check Windows 10 Updates

  1. Click the Start button, win10_start then click Settings.

  2. Click Update & Security.

  3. Click Check for Updates.

  4. Windows will automatically install any detected updates and will prompt you to restart the computer, if necessary.

  5. After restarting, repeat the process above until there are no more important updates to install.

By default, Windows 10 is set to automatically check for updates. You will usually see this as you are shutting down and are prompted to Install Updates and Shutdown.

Manually Check Windows 7 Updates

  1. Click the Start button, win7start then click Control Panel.

  2. If the View by setting in the upper right says Category, change it to Large icons or Small icons.

  3. Open the Windows Update control panel.

  4. Regardless of whether you see the message "No important updates available," click the link Check for updates on the left. Wait while your computer checks for updates.

  5. If Windows Update reports that you have important updates available, click the Install Updates button. You may be prompted to restart you computer.

  6. After restarting, repeat the process above until there are no more important updates to install.
