Bruce Sadjak, libraries

THE BASICS:

What do you do at Smith?

Reference librarian in the Neilson Library and instricutional coordinator for the Smith College Libraries.

How many years have you been at the college?

Twenty-eight.

What is your busy season?

All year, especially during the fall and spring terms and during the School for Social Work program all summer.

NOW THE FUN STUFF:

Who gets the most face time with you?

Students at the reference desk and lots of classes.

What are you reading now?

Just finished 119 collections of essays and 2,123 articles and book reviews on English language, literature, folklore and film for the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL), for which I and my colleague, Jim Kelly (from UMass) are North American editors. Now I can turn to some fun summer reading at last.

What is your favorite movie?

Young Frankenstein.

If you suddenly had two hours of free time, what would you do?

Have dinner at the CIA (no, not that one), the Culinary Institute of America.

What is your favorite wall hanging at home?

A picture by the American painter Robert Stark, two of whose paintings my wife, Barbara, and I bought as a young couple.

What annoys the heck out of you?

Sometimes motorcycle noise at 3 a.m.

Do you eat fast food?

Sometimes I eat food fast but never fast food.

Do you consider yourself an urban, suburban or rural person?

Definitely urban...which is why it's fun to vacation outside the city.

Who are your role models?

All my reference librarian colleagues who work so hard to learn and teach.

What's your favorite thing about where you grew up?

Chicago is a really cool place—museums, restaurants, the lakefront, really neat people from everywhere, a good transportation system, a great public library, and endless places to explore.

What single piece of advice would you give to Smithies?

Forget the money, do what makes you truly happy.
