WOZQ Now Available Worldwide

Since 1977, Smith students have operated their own radio station, filling the 91.9 FM frequency with sounds and announcements as varied as the thousands of personalities who have occupied the studio mic.

As of this fall, the WOZQ broadcast reach expanded significantly with a new Web-streaming feature that allows listening on the Internet.

“The Web streaming opens our listening audience up to the world,” says Jacqueline Batten ’07, WOZQ station manager. “We can be heard in Miami, Long Beach and Florence, Italy, for example. Friends who are abroad have called in to make requests!”

Online Web streaming has been a goal for the student-run station for the past four years, says Batten. “We never thought it would actually become a reality,” she says. “This semester, with the help of our talented tech director [Allison Tinney ’07], our technological dreams came true.”

Now, WOZQ can be heard from any computer equipped with iTunes (at least version 5.0) or Windows Media Player 9 (or higher).

You never really know what you might hear on WOZQ. This time of year, you might catch a Muppets version of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” followed by James Taylor crooning “Go Tell it on the Mountain.” At other times, you might hear cuts by the bands Sonic Youth or Green Day.

The station puts more than 90 student deejays on the air during the year, divided into urban, general and specialty shows. But for the most part, the deejays are free to play whatever they want, says Batten.

That’s one of the station’s strengths, she says. “We always try to present the most diverse programming."

With its mix of kitsch, pop, punk, jazz and everything else, WOZQ may be the most diverse local radio station on the airwaves.

Now it’s available online, too.
