Hunger
Banquet to Assist African People
On Thursday,
April 27, Smith students representing a coalition of campus
religious, political and activist organizations will hold
a Hunger Banquet to raise funding and support to combat genocide
in Sudan and drought in east Africa.
The banquet, which
will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in Davis Ballroom, will feature
a talk by Eric Reeves, professor of English language and literature
at Smith, who is among the nation's most outspoken experts
on the Sudan genocide. Reeves has helped focus international
attention on the systematic ethnic victimization of people
in the country’s Darfur region by publishing essays
on the ongoing tragedy in the Washington Post, the
Los Angeles Times and other publications, and testifying
before Congress. He has also consulted for human rights and
humanitarian organizations on the violations in Sudan.
Reeves will be
introduced by President Carol T. Christ.
The banquet will
also feature a menu of African food, which will be served
in symbolic proportion to “how much people around the
world eat,” according to organizers.
To help raise
funds, a silent auction will accompany the banquet, as will
jewelry for sale made by Ugandan women.
Entertainment
will include an African musical performance, and an array
of information will be on hand about how to get involved in
helping people in Africa.
Tickets for the
banquet will be available at the door before the event for
$15, general, $6 for students with ID.
