Smith to Share New Energy Manager

A new shared position among Smith, Mount Holyoke and Amherst colleges will assist the three institutions in administering the purchase of utilities and in developing and implementing a self-sustaining energy conservation program.

Todd Holland was recently appointed by Five Colleges, Inc., to the position of Energy Manager for the three colleges. The shared position represents a two-year pilot effort funded by part of a grant to Five Colleges, Inc., from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to encourage collaborative models in administration, according to a recently Five Colleges press release.

Energy management was labeled a top priority by physical plant directors several years ago in a study commissioned by the Five College Principal Business Officers. The directors recommended the establishment of a shared position, similar to two other Five College positions in risk management and recycling, “that would furnish the schools with the specialized expertise needed to purchase energy more cheaply, negotiate better contracts, and identify over-consumption,” says the release.

As Energy Manager, Holland will work to establish collaborative committees among the consortium members to promote energy conservation and to avoid duplication of efforts from campus to campus. Hampshire College may consider sharing the position as well, following the pilot period.

Holland comes to Five Colleges from vanZelm Heywood & Shadford, an engineering consulting firm in West Hartford, Connecticut, for which he served as a senior mechanical engineer. In that capacity, he completed several projects for Smith and other area colleges, including master plans and infrastructure upgrade designs. Most recently, Holland worked on the sustainable mechanical design for the new Engineering and Molecular Sciences Building.
