Campus Under Construction

It’s nothing like recent summers on campus this year in terms of construction and renovation projects. However, several small-but-essential projects are in the works and a few large-scale plans are on the horizon.

Several campus roads are receiving improvements this summer. Lower College Lane is currently getting a sidewalk along part of its expanse, up to the top of the hill where it intersects with upper College Lane. The sidewalk will be completed by the end of July. Mandelle Road will soon have additional parking spaces. And Chapin Drive is undergoing construction this month.

In Seelye Hall, construction is under way in the basement to renovate the computer labs there, replace paint and carpet, add new lighting and upgrade heating systems. Seelye will also be fitted with new furniture and machinery. Construction there will take place through August.

In the Davis Center, the first floor kitchen and dining space, which once housed the popular Jittery’s Café, will be converted to space for the Mwangi Cultural Center, which has been housed in Tilly Hall for the past two years after moving from its long-time space in Lilly Hall.

In Wright Hall, the Jahnige Center in the basement floor is undergoing minor remodeling in its media lab and will receive new furniture, paint and machinery.

Other current projects include:

  • Lyman Plant House: a reconfiguration of pathways and plants in the cool temperature house

  • Gill Hall: replacement of the steam heating system with a new hot water system

  • Capen Gardens: complete renovation of plants, walks and systems

  • Clark Science Center: several small modifications

  • Campus Center: fixture of a new motorized gate to block the loading dock from Elm Street.

In addition, several kitchens on campus are being decommissioned this summer in accordance with the college’s dining plan; some campus residence entrances are being equipped with systems for OneCard access; and preliminary work has begun for installation of a new campus telephone system, scheduled for activation in December.

Near-future construction projects include:

  • A new engineering and molecular science building (construction scheduled to begin in spring 2006).

  • A pond dredging project next summer.
