Smith Athletics Department On the Move

By Portia Lowe, marketing, promotions and events coordinator in the athletic department and residence coordinator of Jordan house

A first-hand account of Smith athletes and administrators helping new students with the arduous and intimidating task of taking up residence at Smith for the first time.

On Saturday, August 30, more than 600 students moved into Smith College housing for their first year of college. They were greeted by residence life representatives, house leaders, heads of new students (HONS) and athletes.

Though clouds loomed nearby, not a drop of rain fell to dampen the athletic department’s first community service effort of the year. Athletes from crew, cross country, field hockey, soccer, tennis and volleyball teams assisted students moving into their rooms. Coaches and administrators lent a helping hand as well.

Athletes, coaches and administrators assembled themselves in the Quad, the largest area of campus with ten houses and more than 800 residents. Smith athletics coordinated more than 70 representatives to serve in two-hour shifts on Saturday afternoon and early evening. First-year students were in awe and parents were appreciative of the service provided by the athletic department.

Lime green athletic shirts and neon yellow shirts worn by the HONS proved to be a wonderful (and colorful) collaboration.

With a successful first event, plans are already in the works for providing move-in assistance for the Class of 2008. But the Smith athletic department’s commitment to community service goes beyond the campus: preparations are being made for a can food drive with a local radio station prior to Thanksgiving.
