Two Administrators Join Smith, One Departs

Georgia Yuan, general counsel

She may not have been anywhere near Northampton, but Georgia Yuan began her new position as general counsel and assistant to President Carol Christ this month.

Yuan, who will begin at Smith on Monday, June 30, has been telecommuting from afar during the month of June. Yuan formerly served as the university counsel at the University of Idaho for nine years.

As the college’s chief legal officer, Yuan is responsible for providing advice on all legal affairs affecting the college, according to the president. She is Smith’s first general counsel.

Richard Myers, director of budget and financial planning

Also new to campus is Richard Myers, the college’s new director of budget and financial planning. Myers replaces Jonathan Lovell, who is retiring. (Myers and Lovell have been working in conjunction during the month of June.)

Myers comes to Smith from Williams College, where he served most recently as associate provost and director of budgets. He has also held the positions of assistant to the provost at the University of Virginia, where he earned his bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees.

A farewell reception was held for Lovell on Thursday, June 26.

Brenda Allen, director of institutional diversity

Brenda Allen is departing for Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she has accepted the position of associate provost and director of institutional diversity. Allen also served on the faculty of the departments of psychology and Afro-American studies at Smith. She came to Smith in 1990 from Yale University, where she taught in the departments of psychology, African and Afro-American studies. She earned her doctoral and masters degrees from Howard University and her bachelors degree from Lincoln University.

“Brenda has been an extraordinary faculty member and administrator whose listening skills and wise counsel will have long-term benefits for the college,” said President Carol Christ in a campus-wide email message announcing Allen’s departure. “Our congratulations are, of course, mixed with sadness.”

Fletcher Blanchard, professor of psychology, will serve as acting director of institutional diversity.
