Global STRIDE Fellows

Each year, the Smith College Office of Admission selects some of its finest incoming first-year students and offers them the opportunity to become STRIDE (Student Research in Departments) fellows. The STRIDE program offers students with outstanding academic and personal qualifications a close working relationship with a faculty member during their first two years at Smith College.

In 2008, Smith College launched the Global STRIDE program. This program allows students to combine two years of their STRIDE research stipend and apply it to study abroad or to an intensive language program during the summer between their first and second year at Smith.

The Program

First Year

During the first year of the program, Global STRIDE fellows meet weekly with their faculty mentor to discuss readings that highlight the challenges, joys and difficulties of crossing linguistic, cultural and national borders, in preparation for their summer international experiences, and to work on small projects.

Second Year

During the second year of the Global STRIDE fellowship, students may apply the international experience they've gained during their summer study abroad through an internship in one of the campus offices or programs that focus on international exchanges or international issues.
