The Doll people premieres at Smith College

Musical Theatre Adaptation By Beecham and HillGartner

The Doll People: A World-Premiere Children's Musical
by Jahnna Beecham and Malcolm Hillgartner
adapted from The Doll People by Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin

Northampton, MA - A new children’s musical will receive its first performances at Smith College on October 18, 19, 24 and 25 at 8:00pm and a matinee performance on October 26 at 2:00pm. Based on the novel by Laura Godwin and Smith Medalist Ann M. Martin ’77, The Doll People has been adapted for the stage by Jahnna Beecham and Malcolm Hillgartner. Ellen W. Kaplan directs a cast of Smith students, with musical direction by Amy Crawford and choreography by Kelly Silliman (Smith MFA ’13). Recent Smith graduates Claire DeLiso and Amber Tanudjaja designed the sets, costume, and lighting.

These performances are incredibly exciting for everyone involved, and there’s certainly something for all ages. The Doll People offers original music and choreography, innovative staging and set design, a life-sized Victorian dollhouse, a toy car driving around onstage, gigantic animations and at the heart of it all, a great story.

The opening weekend is a part of the celebration of the inauguration of Smith’s new president, Kathleen McCartney, who has devoted her career to the advocacy of early childhood education. The second weekend of shows coincides with Smith’s annual family weekend, so the writers of The Doll People will be here on double duty, as their daughter is currently enrolled at Smith!

All performances will take place in Theatre 14, Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts on Green Street. Tickets are $8 general admission, $5 for seniors and students, $3 for Smith students. Thursday, October 24 is Dollar Night - all seats are on sale for a dollar, no advance sales. Please contact the Box Office for information on group discounts for schools, library and community groups.
