Windows 10 Tips


Here are some basic tips and quick references to using Windows 10.

Adding Applications to the Start Menu Live Tiles
  1. Click on the start menu.
  2. Click All Apps.
  3. Navigate to the application you want to add to Live Tiles.
  4. Right-Click on the application and select Pin to Start.
  5. The application will appear in the Live Tiles.
Moving Applications Around inside of Live Tiles
  1. Left-click and drag the icon to the location.
  2. Drag the icon next to another application to add it to that group.
  3. Drag it to an empty space until a light-blue line appears to create a new group with this application.
Renaming Groups on Live Tile
  1. Click on start menu.
  2. Within the Live Tiles click on the name of the group.
  3. Type the name you want for the group of applications.
  4. Click outside of the text box to save the change.
Right-Click on Start Menu for Utilities
  • Programs and Features - To uninstall programs and applications.
  • Power Options - Adjust screensaver and sleep mode timing.
  • Event Viewer - View windows event logs.
  • System - View system information.
  • Task Manager - View running processes and computer usage.
  • Control Panel - Access to other utilities and tools.
  • File Explorer - Navigate through your documents on your harddrive and connected network drives.
How to resize the Start Menu
  1. Hover the mouse over the edge of the Start menu. The mouse pointer will change to a double headed arrow.
  2. Drag the edge to the desired size.

Utilizing the Taskbar

How to Configure the Taskbar
  1. Right-Click the Taskbar on a blank spot and select PROPERTIES.
    • Lock the taskbar - Locks the icons in position so they can not be removed.
    • Auto-hide the taskbar - Will hide the taskbar from view. Move your mouse to the taskbar to have it show.
    • Use small taskbar buttons - Will make the taskbar icons smaller.
    • Taskbar location on the screen - Use the drop down to change the location of the taskbar. Either the top, bottom, left, or right of your screen.

    • Always combine, hide labels - This option will keep all open windows of the program combined in one icon.
    • Combine when taskbar is full - This option will only combine them all into one icon if the taskbar gets full with multiple windows.
    • Never combine - This option will never combine the icons. It will keep squeezing them into the taskbar.
How to Pin to Taskbar
  1. Right-Click on any app on the Start Menu, Desktop, Taskbar(if unpinned), File Explorer, an app or folder.
  2. Select PIN TO TASKBAR.
How to Use the Action Center
  1. Click on the chat bubble next to the time/date on the bottom right on taskbar.
  2. Click a message for details. In order to dismiss it, hover over the message and click the X button.
    • Click Clear All to remove all messages.
    • Click Collapse to see more messages. This will collapse the grid to a single row.

Other Buttons include:

  • Connect - Connect to a wireless display and audio devices using Bluetooth, Miracast, or WiGig.
  • All Settings - Opens the Settings app.

Using Apps

Apps and programs work much the same.

How to Resize an Application
  1. Move your mouse to the edge or corner of a non-full screened window. This will change the mouse pointer to a double-headed arrow.
  2. Click and Drag the window to make it larger or smaller.
Searching for Applications and Programs
  • Open the Start Menu. Start typing.
  • On your taskbar there is a search windows box that you can click inside and start typing.
  • You can narrow your search by selecting the appropriate icon on the top of the search results.
Utilizing the Multiple Desktop Feature

Windows 10 utilizes virtual Desktops. This allows you to organize multiple applications on seperate virtual screens. You can use this with multiple monitors or with just one.

  1. Go to Task View. Icon next to the search box.
  2. In the bottom right corner click on the + New Desktop.
  3. Click the new Desktop thumbnail to select the new virtual desktop.
    • Each virtual desktop displays its own set of taskbar icons. If you want to change this go to Settings->System->Multitasking->Virtual Desktops.
    • If you want to move open apps from one virtual desktop to another, open Task View and Right-Click an app. Click Move To and select the destination virtual desktop.

Utilizing File Explorer

Managing Files and Folders

To open File Explorer press the windows key + E or click the folder icon on the taskbar.

  • The Ribbon gives you options and tools as you are working with files and folders.
  • Some Ribbons only appear for specific file types.
  • Click a Ribbon tab in order to open the drop-down options. (Home, View, etc.)
  • The Navigation Pane on the left displays the list of folders and drives.
  • Click the + or - buttons next to the folder name to open/close the folder to view files/folders inside.
How to Customize the Quick Access View

Quick access is the default view for File Explorer. It will display frequently or recently used files or folders.

  1. Click the View ribbon tab.
  2. Click the options button.
  3. Change the OPEN FILE EXPLORER TO list to THIS PC or the option you desire.
  4. In the Privacy section, toggle the checkboxes SHOW RECENTLY USED FILES IN QUICK ACCESS and SHOW FREQUENTLY USED FOLDERS IN QUICK ACCESS in order to disable them from automatically being displayed.

You can add or remove items manually by Right-Clicking an item in File Explorer and choosing PIN TO QUICK ACCESS or REMOVE or UNPIN FROM QUICK ACCESS.

How to Send Files and Folders to a Zip File
  1. Select the items to zip.
  2. Choose Share, then Zip. Or Right-Click on one of the highlighted files and Hover over Send to, select Compressed(Zipped) folder.
  3. Name the zip file and press Enter.

The zip files will appear in this folder and is viewable with File Explorer. You can add or remove files or folders to it.

How to Unzip/Extract Zipped Files
  1. Select a Zip folder.
  2. Choose Compressed Folder->Tools->Extract then Extract All.
  3. Browse to find your destination location.
  4. Click Extract.
  5. Extracting Specific Files:

    1. Open a Zipped folder and select the items you want to extract.
    2. Move or copy selected items as usual. or choose Compressed Folder Tools->Extract->Choose Location.

Settings and Troubleshooting

Utilizing the Settings App

Adjust global settings for the system, connected devices, wireless and network connections, privacy, system updates, and more.

  1. Click Windows Icon->Settings or Click Action Center chat bubble on bottom right of taskbar->All Settings.
  2. Click the desired settings group and modify settings as needed.
  3. Click the backwards arrow at the top left to return to the main Settings screen.

Some Useful Settings:

  • System, Apps & Features - To uninstall or move an app.
  • System, Default Apps - To change the default application for email, music, etc.
  • Network & Internet, WiFi - To manage your WiFi connections.
  • Accounts, Your Account - To assign an account picture, and manage related accounts.
  • Update & Security, Backup - To Backup and restore files.
What to do when an App Freezes
  1. Right-Click windows icon and select Task Manager or press ctrl+shit+esc.
  2. If necessary, Click more Details.
  3. If an app's Status is blank, wait to see if the program will unfreeze.
  4. If an app's Status is Not Responding, select the program and Click End Task.
