Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Update, February 2, 2020

Dear students, staff and faculty:

Earlier today, a Smith student notified the college that she believes it is possible—though unconfirmed—that she may have returned from China on the same flight as an eastern Massachusetts college student who later tested positive for the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Because our student also indicated that she has cold-like symptoms, the college immediately contacted the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) to discuss protocols, as advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

At this time, neither the DPH nor CDC has indicated that the Smith student - or any member of our community - is at risk of exposure or transmission of the 2019-nCoV coronavirus.

Out of an abundance of caution, and in accordance with DPH and CDC guidance, the student will follow standard flu treatment guidelines and remain in isolation. Medical staff will stay in close contact with the student to ensure she receives the care and support that adheres to public health guidelines.

While there is no evidence of a threat to the Smith community at this time, we are sending this email to ensure that students, staff and faculty are fully informed and to address any rumors or speculation regarding the wellbeing of our community.

Information about the novel coronavirus and tips on how to stay healthy and stop the spread of any illness can be found on the Schacht Center website.

We will continue to be in touch with updates and information.

Sincerely,
Kris Evans
