At this moment of time in the United States, approximately 150 people die each day due to drug overdose and we have surpassed the total amount of deaths experienced at the height of the AIDS Epidemic. Social workers in all segments of the system from hospitals and crisis services to community mental health centers and schools are seeing clients and families directly affected by opioid use or the consequences of the opioid crisis. By working with the principles of harm reduction, we can develop greater awareness of how to reduce stigma and provide drug users with knowledge and options that will help them remain alive and well. This workshop will include a facilitated discussion of strategies for reducing stigma, and specific examples of harm reduction interventions that range from emergency first aid and overdose prevention (Narcan) to developing a risk reduction plan with drug user. Clients of all ages, who present with a wide variety of concerns, may use or be affected by other’s use of opiates. This workshop will help you develop essential knowledge and skills to meet the needs of clients who use drugs.
Bio:
Jill Shanahan is an advocate and harm reductionist who has been working with people who inject drugs (PWID) for the past 12 years. Beginning this work in New Bedford, MA as an intern and undergrad at Umass Dartmouth, she fell in love with the concept of harm reduction and really working with folks where they are at, and not where others think they should be. She is passionate about teaching others how to implement harm reduction principles in various settings such as, most recently, police departments, nursing schools and social service agencies. Jill is currently the Assistant Director of Drug User Health for Tapestry's Syringe Access Programs. She is a Massachusetts Department of Public Health Overdose Education and Naloxone Master Trainer.
