Online CE FAQ

The following are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the Online Continuing Education courses. If you do not find the answer you're looking for, please email us at sswced@smith.edu or call 413-585-7970.

How do I register for classes?

Go to the Online Continuing Education registration page, where you’ll be able to select courses, pay via credit card online and provide your contact information. We are not able to accept registration by mail, fax or phone.

How much do courses cost and how do I pay?

Courses vary in price depending on length, from $25 for a .5-hour course to $100 for a 5-hour course. There is also a non-refundable $5 registration processing fee.

Currently you can pay for courses by MasterCard or Visa through our secure online credit card processing.

How much time do I have to complete the course?

You will have 30 days from the date you enroll in SmithOnline (our electronic classroom) to complete the course. However, all SmithOnline access will end May 15, regardless of the enrollment date.

Do classes happen in real time?
Classes are not offered in “real time;” you may enter the electronic classroom and listen to/watch your course in any number of sittings if you prefer. However, you must complete the course and submit the evaluation within 30 days of receiving your username and password. All SmithOnline access will end May 15 regardless of enrollment date.

Do I have to watch/listen to the course all at once?

You may enter the electronic classroom and listen to/watch your course in any number of sittings. Longer courses are broken into several sections and all courses have media controls that allow you to play, pause and review material.

Will I be able to access my course as soon as I register?

Yes. Upon registration you will receive an enrollment key via email that allows you to access your course through SmithOnline. The SmithOnline How To (PDF) has detailed instructions on creating your username and password as well as on how to enroll.

How do I get CE credits and how long will it take to receive them?
Continuing Education (CE) credits will be available to you through SmithOnline as soon as you complete your evaluation form and course assessment. You will be able to print your certificate as well as have it emailed to you as a PDF.

If my agency will pay for this class, how do I arrange payment or reimbursement?

As mentioned above, we currently only accept payment by MasterCard or Visa. If your agency does not have a credit card you can use, we suggest you pay using your personal card and ask your agency to reimburse you.

Is there any limit on how many classes I can take?

While there is no limit on the number of courses you may take, please note that the time you have available to complete the course is limited to 30 days from enrollment. If your time is limited, it might be preferable to register for a new course after you have completed the first one.

Is there any discount if I take more than one course?

As online courses are offered at a discounted tuition rate, no additional discounts are available.

Is there a Smith Field Affiliate discount?
Tuition is waived for all Smith College SSW Field Affiliates (i.e. current student supervisors and Field Faculty Advisers.) You will pay the $5 registration processing fee only.

Are courses available any time or only offered on specific dates?
Registration will be open for this set of courses only until the end of March. You will have 30 days from the date you enroll in SmithOnline (our electronic classroom) to complete the course. However, all SmithOnline access will end May 15 regardless of enrollment date.

Are the courses audio only or audio/video?
All courses are accessible to you in audio format and most are available in both audio and video. Captions or transcriptions are available for all video and audio as well. Once you enter our electronic classroom you will see which options are available for the course you selected and you may choose the format that best meets your needs.
Note: if the video is not displaying in your browser, try updating it to the latest version or using a different browser.

The Smith College School for Social Work is committed to accessibility, so captions and/or transcriptions are available for all media. If you need additional accommodations for your online course, please contact sswced@smith.edu.

Do I complete an evaluation after the course and if so, how do I submit it?
One of the requirements for receiving CEUs is that you complete the evaluation form. The evaluation form is available online through our electronic classroom, SmithOnline. You can fill it out and submit it online once you have completed your coursework. You will also be asked to complete a brief course assessment, three multiple-choice questions to assess your knowledge of the material.

What is your refund policy?
If for some reason you opt to not begin the online course for which you have registered, please email your refund request to sswced@smith.edu. We will only honor refund requests if you’ve made no attempt to enter the electronic classroom. Once you log into the electronic classroom, whether you begin the course or not, we are unable to honor the refund request. We cannot provide any refunds after May 15, 2017.

What if I want to ask the instructor a question?

All of our course material is recorded from past lectures and seminars, so the instructors are not currently available to answer questions. However, many of our instructors participate regularly in our on-campus Professional Education Seminar Series, so you might very well have an opportunity to take a class with them in person next summer.

What if I can't remember my username or password?
To reset your username and password, visit our online lost password page. You will receive email instructions on how to reset your password.

What is an Enrollment Key?
The Enrollment Key is a passcode required by SmithOnline to enroll yourself in your online course(s). This passcode is unique for each course in our SmithOnline system and you will not be able to access SmithOnline courses without the enrollment key. You will only need to enter the Enrollment Key once per course in order to enroll.
