9 – 10:30 a.m. Toolbox Introduction & Intention-Setting with Council for Students of Color (Open to all incoming students)
Campus Center Carroll Room
This portion of Toolbox Day will focus on contextualizing toolbox day as a resource for incoming students to learn about anti-oppressive practices. ideally, learning these skills at the beginning of the summer will allow all students to put these skills into practice throughout the summer. This will also be an opportunity to get to know each other as Toolbox Day co-participants.
10:35 a.m. – 12:05 p.m. Trans and Gender Nonconforming (TGNC) Workshop and Student Panel
Campus Center Carroll Room
Davey Shlasko, one of the Sotomayor Fellows, will provide an overview of key concepts around gender diversity (understood intersectionally), cissexism, and identities and experiences falling under the broad category of “transgender and gender-nonconforming” (TGNC). Davey will facilitate a discussion, along with several student leaders, about trans inclusion in SSW and students’ roles in allyship and solidarity for gender justice. Following the workshop there will be a student panel in which TGNC students can answer questions and share their experiences at Smith and in the field.

FRAGRANCE-FREE: As you know SSW is striving to be a fragrance-free campus. This is especially important for this workshop, because fragrances make Davey sick. Please arrive to the workshop with no manufactured fragrances on your hair, skin or clothing. If you have questions about how to do this, feel free to contact Davey in advance: dshlasko@smith.edu.

(Facilitated by the Unlearning Racism group)
Meet at King/Scales Lawn
The DisOrientation portion of the day is intended to provide resources for white-identifying students, by white-identifying students, but anyone is welcome to attend. Our aim is to introduce skills and concepts to confront racism in the Smith SSW context. DisOrientation is presented by the campus group Unlearning Racism, which meets weekly, and dives more in depth with these skills and concepts throughout the summer. We ask that those attending place themselves in one of two groups, which will have parallel discussions based on your personal experiences:
Group 1: “New to this concept/material” group: I have not yet deeply explored concepts of racism and white supremacy.
Group 2: “More familiar with this concept/material” group: I have more actively engaged with these concepts through conversations, reading, and/or learning.
