Smith College collaborates with the broader community on a wide variety of science learning opportunities. Whether teaching microscopy for the Literacy Project of Northampton, designing an engineering process at the Adult Learning Center in Holyoke or traveling to area high schools to teach students about zebrafish, these outreach efforts produce extraordinary results. Young children develop an affinity for science. Older students become more inquisitive about challenging subject matter. And Smith students gain the rewards of encouraging people to discover more about their world and their own capabilities.

Outreach Initiatives

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

As part of their annual community outreach activities, the Smith chapter of the Society of Women Engineers sponsors Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. This is part of the nationwide Engineers Week effort sponsored by the DiscoverE organization.

Smith Science & Engineering Program

The Smith Summer Science and Engineering Program (SSEP) is a four-week residential program for exceptional high school girls with strong interests in science, engineering and medicine who come to campus to conduct hands-on research.

Interterm High School Science Teaching Internships

Each January, Smith science students team up with local high school science teachers during Smith's interterm. This opportunity enables Smith students to prepare and deliver science lessons, while the high school students gain exposure to exciting experiments.
