The Clark Science Center forms a vibrant hub for the sciences, mathematics and engineering at Smith. Within the center's five buildings—Ford, Burton, Sabin-Reed, McConnell and Bass halls—you'll find traditional and computer classrooms, research and student labs, seminar rooms, lecture halls, a computer resource center and faculty offices.

The center coordinates shared resources across its community, offering state-of-the-art equipment and instruments. Laser labs, sophisticated telescopes, global positioning receivers and a National Geodetic Survey continuously operating reference station are just some of the exciting resources available.

Five Research Centers

The Clark Science Center's complex of buildings is home to five centers:

Additional Resources

Faculty, staff and students involved in the sciences, mathematics and engineering also have access to a variety of additional resources at Smith.

Young Science Library

Anchoring Bass Hall, the Young Science Library provides opportunities for deep research and quiet study. One of the largest college science libraries in the United States, it has nearly 200,000 volumes, more than 22,000 microforms, 700 scientific journals, and 150,000 topographical and geologic sheet maps.

MacLeish Field Station

The MacLeish Field Station offers environmental study and experiential learning in a forested and agricultural landscape. The 243-acre site is a patchwork of protected forest and farmland. The Bechtel Environmental Classroom, only the fifth building in the world to be certified as a Living Building, offers seminar, performance and laboratory space.

Center for Environment, Ecological Design and Sustainability (CEEDS)

CEEDS embodies Smith's dedication to educating women in sustainability and matters of environmental concern. The center houses the Office of Sustainability, faculty across multiple science disciplines, and the staff responsible for the MacLeish Field Station and Smith's environmental monitoring initiatives.

Center for Design & Fabrication

The Center for Design & Fabrication offers machining, welding and fabrication, woodworking and rapid prototyping tools for faculty and students. The shop gives students the chance to learn basic skills and design principles in building their own projects. Watch this video to learn more about the center.

Botanic Garden

Few colleges can boast of an entire campus that is an authentic botanic garden and arboretum. The gardens are ever-changing and unfold with the seasons. The Lyman Plant House is home to plant physiology and horticulture laboratories and to a teaching collection of plant species representing every region of the world.

The Spinelli Center for Quantitative Learning

The Spinelli Center supports students doing quantitative work across the curriculum.
