It's all in the lingo

spacerThere are some words that are used to describe lesbians in our society that are not always pleasant. These words include "dyke" and "faggot" or "fag." The word "dyke" is a derogatory term used to describe a lesbian who has "masculine" features. The word "queer" is accepted by many gays because it symbolizes what they stand for, and it now carries a positive connotation. I feel that before you call someone a name, it is important to know why you are doing it, and what point you want to get across. People who are not comfortable around gays, or who don't have gays as close friends, most often say these hurtful names. Homophobia is defined as enmity towards gays. Tracy stated, "My town is narrow-minded, and if you are 'different,' you have a hard time living there."

Giving homophobia the boot

spacerIn order to help in the fight against homophobia it is important to tell your friends that it is wrong to make jokes about people who are different. In school, if a teacher or peer makes a comment that you feel really hurt by, you should write the teacher an anonymous letter telling them that you felt uncomfortable. You can also go to your guidance counselor or close friend and tell them about your dilemma, or have them talk with the person. Homophobia again is not something one is born with, but it is characteristic of much of society.
