By Car

From the South — New York/Connecticut Area: Smith is less than three hours from Manhattan. Take the Hutchinson River Pkwy to the Merritt Pkwy, to Route 91 North, or through Connecticut via Route 95 East to Route 91 North. Northampton is on Route I-91 in Massachusetts. Take Exit 18, and follow Route 5 North into the center of town. Turn left onto Route 9 (Main Street).

To park in the college’s garage (free and open to the public on weekends), turn left at the second set of lights (Route 66, West Street); the garage will be on your left, after Forbes Library (Northampton's public library) and Garrison Hall (a lavender clapboard house, home to Smith’s College Relations offices). Parking is also available along Route 9.

From the North — Vermont/New Hampshire: From Route I-91 South, take Exit 20, and follow onto Route 5 South into the center of town. At the intersection of Route 5 and Route 9 (Main Street), turn right onto Route 9 (Main Street). Then follow the same directions as above from Route 9 to campus.

From the East — Boston and Rte. 128: The ride from Boston to Smith takes a little under two hours, without traffic. Take the Mass Pike to Exit 4, and take Route I-91 North. Take Exit 18 and turn left, onto Route 5 North. Follow Route 5 North into the center of town. Turn left onto Route 9 (Main Street). Follow directions above for visitors from the south.

From the West — Albany and the Berkshires: Take the Mass Pike East to Exit 4. At exit 4, get on Route I-91 North. Once on I-91, follow the directions above for visitors from the south.

By Bus

Peter Pan, Greyhound and Vermont Transit serve the area. Most routes go to the main bus terminal in Springfield, where you can catch another bus to Northampton. Buses run almost hourly between Springfield and Northampton. Smith is a 10-minute walk or a short taxi ride from the bus station. By Train

Amtrak — (800) 872-7245 (800-USA-RAIL) — runs trains to Springfield from most locations along the Eastern Seaboard. From Springfield you can take a bus or get van service to Northampton from Valley Transporter. By Air

The closest airport is Bradley International, about 35 minutes from Northampton with easy access onto Route I-91. It is served by most major airlines and is located about 35 miles south of Northampton near Hartford, Connecticut. Flying into Bradley rather than to Boston's Logan Airport gives you a shorter drive to Northampton and spares you city traffic congestion.
