Status & Operating Modes

Status & Operating Modes

Day-to-day life on campus will be guided by green/yellow/orange/red operating modes, with the progression of colors designating least to most restrictive modes. The operating mode will be determined by pandemic conditions on our campus, in the city of Northampton and in the commonwealth of Massachusetts. The college will move between modes as necessary.

Current Status: GREEN

Summary COVID rates on campus are low and do not appear to be increasing.
Residential Life On-campus students may visit other on-campus students’ rooms and houses (limited to two guests in residential room). Kitchens available via sign-up, common spaces available during designated hours. Food and grocery delivery drivers may not enter building; recipient must meet delivery driver outside.
Dining Open, limited internal seating.
Learning Mode In-class and remote
Testing Regular testing required for all students, on-campus faculty and staff.

When and why might the college change modes?

The college will change modes between red, orange, yellow and green infrequently—not on a day-to-day basis. We have intentionally not applied precise parameters or a quantitative formula to indicate when we will shift modes. As a result of our review of other institutions, we have seen formulaic approaches that suggest a mode shift when it is unwarranted or that fail to suggest a shift when it is. In addition, we are tracking an extensive list of indicators, some of which are qualitative. For example, if we are seeing periods of noncompliance with public health behaviors, we might consider a mode shift. This is a list of indicators we track as we make decisions.
