In an email to the Smith College community, Smith President Kathleen McCartney yesterday announced the college’s decision to cancel this year’s Commencement and Reunions.

“I recognize that this is a great disappointment to many, especially seniors and their families,” she wrote. “Yet I am confident that most, if not all, of you will agree that this is a prudent decision that protects the best interests of our community and the communities beyond the Grécourt Gates.

“When we are on the other side of this pandemic, we will determine a way to recognize the great class of 2020 and to celebrate your many achievements.”

In the same email, McCartney announced:

  • Smith is committed to prorated reimbursements for room and board.
  • Smith has distributed more than $60,000 in emergency travel funding to approximately 160 students.
  • The college has ensured that the 300 students who cannot return home can remain on campus.
  • Students with need-based financial aid work study jobs will be made whole. They will receive a payment equivalent to the average number of weekly hours worked year-to-date multiplied by the weeks remaining in the semester (not to exceed the maximum of their financial aid award).
