Running Out of Room But Not Ideas   Three Far-Reaching Branches   Plath's Vibrant Zest for Life

An Appealing Abundance of Archives College Archivist Nanci Young says working in the archives is like "having your birthday and receiving presents every single day." It's all about discovery, she says, and the abundance of stories told by the artifacts and historical records housed here. So we asked her to name three of the most intriguing items in the archives. She named eight and lamented that eight won't do the archives justice. Nonetheless, here are some of Young's top picks: A large collection of student diaries, journals and letters ranging from 1879 to 1994. Some 600 scrapbooks and photo albums from 1879 to the present. A film of campus scenes made by the class of 1929. "It currently is the oldest film we have of the campus." An early color film from the class of 1942 also depicts campus scenes from 1939 to 1942. Sophia Smith's diary and assorted books from her personal library. "The diary provides insights into the life of a single woman living in Hatfield, Massachusetts, in the 1860s and 1870s." The Kneeland Garden diary, "The Story of a Garden in Paradise," kept from 1881 to 1916 by Harriet Josephine Kneeland of 8 Paradise Road, the current location of the President's House.
