Poetry All Around at Smith College

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Poetry will fill the air at Smith College on Tuesday, Dec. 11, as students recite verses from atop soapboxes at well-traveled locations around central campus as classes change throughout the day.  View video.

The event, titled “Poetry All Around” is part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the Poetry Center at Smith.

About two dozen students are planning to read that day at the ten outdoor venues: in front of the Campus Center, John M. Greene Hall, Wright Hall, Sage Hall, Neilson Library, Seelye Hall; and at the Neilson underpass, McConnell Hall patio, Lanning Fountain and Chapin lawn.

Class change times are: 8:50 a.m., 10:20 a.m., 11:50 a.m., 12:50 p.m., 2:50 p.m., and 4:50 p.m. Typically, there is a 10-minute break between classes.

Founded in 1997, the Poetry Center at Smith—alma mater of celebrated poet Sylvia Plath ’55—has a mission to inspire students by bringing poets to campus. Students in the hundreds attend readings by poets of national and international stature, which also draw large community audiences. In addition, the Poetry Center performs outreach to schools and last year launched its first poetry prize for high school girls in Massachusetts.

In honor of the anniversary, the Poetry Center has also invited faculty members in all disciplines to begin their classes that day by reading a poem — either a personal favorite or one that relates to the subject matter of the course.

“We envision this as the first in a series of mini-manifestations of poetry, in this and other forms, perhaps once each semester on into the future,” said Ellen Doré Watson, director of the Poetry Center.

Staff members of Physical Plant constructed the step stools for the event.

“Poetry All Around” is part of a yearlong celebration. View details at https://www.smith.edu/poetrycenter/
