Jan. 16 Meeting to Provide Residents an Opportunity to Learn About Construction Plans

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Smith College is inviting residents and business owners in the greater Green Street/West Street area to an informational meeting about the construction of Ford Hall, the college’s planned engineering and science building.

The public meeting will take place 5:30 – 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, in the lobby of the Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts on Green Street. The meeting will provide interested residents an overview of the project, including site preparation, removal of buildings, and overall timeline, and project management arrangements. Staff from Smith as well as from William A. Berry & Son, the construction managers for the project, will be on hand to answer questions.

The college expects to begin preparing the building site in early 2007, in order to start construction later that spring.

As widely reported, four apartment buildings will be removed for the new building. The demolition will take place in two stages, with the removal of vacant Smith buildings at 78-88 Green Street (the college’s former bookstore and Central Services office) in late February to mid-March. Removal of the four apartment buildings is expected to take place in May.

For more than a year, a relocation consultant hired by Smith has been working with tenants in four affected apartment buildings to help them find new housing and obtain relocation assistance. To date, all but 9 of the 23 original tenants have made new arrangements; some of the nine will be moving to units at 36 Bedford Terrace, which is currently undergoing comprehensive renovation

Residents and business owners in the Green/West/Belmont area are receiving a letter of invitation to the meeting. To read the letter, go online.
