Celebrated Children's Authors and Illustrators Hosted by Smith College Campus School

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—Smith College will bring together more than 30 local names in children’s literature for a benefit book sale and signing from 3 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 7.

The annual event, called “A Celebration of Authors and Illustrators,” is organized by the Smith College Campus School and will take place at Davis Center on Prospect Street. It is free and open to the public.

Proceeds from the book sale will benefit the Lisa Libraries, which collects and donates children’s books to organizations that work with children in poor and underserved communities. Started by Smith alumna and author Ann M. Martin, the Lisa Libraries donated more than 15,000 books during a recent year.

Authors and illustrators attending the event include Smith alumna Jane Yolen, Golden Kite award-winner for “The Girl Who Cried Flowers & Other Tales”; Patricia MacLachlan, author of books for young readers including the Newbery Medal Winner “Sarah, Plain and Tall”; and Jeanne Birdsall, author of the National Book Award Winner for Young People’s Literature, “The Penderwicks.”

The list also includes Anna Alter, Jeannine Atkins, Kathryn Brown, Jennifer Bryan, Cornelia Cornelissen, David Costello, Marguerite Davol, Corinne Demas, Brooke Dyer, Jane Dyer, Scott Fischer, Mordicai Gerstein, Barbara Diamond Goldin, Gary Goss, Rebecca Guay, Norton Juster, Jarrett Krosoczka, Grace Lin, Bob Marstall, Burleigh Muten, Michael Nelson, Richard Michelson, Leslea Newman, Claudia O’Brien, Lisa Papademetriou, Shelley Rotner, Ruth Sanderson, Adam Stemple, Heidi E. Y. Stemple, Cathy Topal and Richard Yarde.

Founded in 1926, the Smith College Campus School is a co-educational laboratory day school enrolling 270 children from Northampton and the surrounding communities in kindergarten through Grade 6. The school has a regular practice of community service that focuses on a range of local, national and international issues and needs.
