American-Stateman reporter Ben Wear recalls how six Smith students became his and his 14-year-old daughter's makeshift family recently while they waited in line nine hours together for free tickets to 'Shakespeare in the Park' in New York City. "The Smith students — Sarah and Maggie are opera singers, while Alex and Jillian are instrumental music majors — had a lively chat for a while...They were tolerant of the old fogy in their midst."

Smith program finds many ways to help nation's veterans
Created in 1918, the Smith College School for Social Work was founded to help meet the needs of veterans returning from World War I. Today, SSW is helping aid veterans by shaping instructional tools like "Coming Home: Military Families Coping with Change," a Sesame Workshop production that focuses on how to help young children cope with the sometimes turbulent return of deployed parents.

Exhibit on Smith Ties to Yaddo

Yaddo, the storied artists' retreat in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., has hosted many of the 20th century's most celebrated American writers and musicians, including John Cheever, Aaron Copland and Truman Capote. Sylvia Plath ’55 and Smith professor Newton Arvin have also occupied rooms in the estate mansion. An exhibition of Smith's Yaddo connections will open in mid-August in Neilson Library, NewsSmith reports.
