Student Cookbook a Nod to Julia Child, Smith Food

Campus Life

As Smith students, our two main obsessions are homework and food. And though most Smithies are a far cry from Julia Child (Smith Class of 1934) in the kitchen, we love Julia Child Day.

In honor of our love for food and Julia Child, the Afternoon Tea student group has put together a cookbook full of recipes that reflect our Smith experiences. Mastering the Art of Smith Cookery features a cover design that honors Julia Child’s consummate cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

The book includes more than 100 recipes gathered from faculty, staff, students, alumnae, dining halls, the Campus Center Café, local restaurants, and even from a 1937 Alumnae Favorite Recipe Cookbook.

The book, which is being printed by Central Services, will be sold at Grécourt Bookshop. But first, we in Afternoon Tea need to know how many copies to print.

If you are interested in purchasing a copy of Mastering the Art of Smith Cookery this month, let us know by sending an email to ordersccookbook@gmail.com with your name and the number of books you would like to buy in the subject line. We are not asking for commitments, just a count for our printing order.

Cookbooks will be available for purchase as of Friday, May 6, through the end of Commencement weekend. Meanwhile, we hope to set up a print-on-demand system for the book in the future.

Part of the proceeds from book sales will be donated to a fund supporting Smith traditions (specifically to help houses buy finer china and tea services for house teas).
