Science, Celebration, and Social Media

On campus and off, as this year's prominent news stories have unfolded and evolved over time, the Gate has chronicled them. The Smith community watched as Ford Hall came together, and then gathered shoulder-to-shoulder for a twilight dedication ceremony. As H1N1 spread, Smith prepared for its impact and educated students about avoiding the virus. For the first time, readers were able to tap into conversations about the college, its people and events through Smith Twitter and Smith Facebook. And all through the year, the Gate has documented notable, annual and occasional happenings—International Students Day, the fifth anniversary of Smith's first engineering class and Midnight Madness—through video, photographs and the written word. Whatever the media, Smith remains a place of remarkable stories and the Gate will continue to tell them. But before ushering in a new year of stories, take a look back, through the Gate, at 2009:
