Campus Center Sets Out Welcome Mat

As students return to campus, it stands to reason that they will flock most often to the Campus Center for events and activities scheduled to welcome them during their first week back.

As at last spring's end-of-semester carnival, CCAB members will be pulling cotton candy at this semester's Welcome Back carnival

Not only does the facility house a range of student services (i.e. Grécourt Bookshop, the mail room, a popular café, meeting spaces, lounges, a game room), it also provides a series of diversionary programs to fill in gaps of study time.

On Monday, Jan. 29, a week long series of such programs kicks off with a Welcome Back Carnival from 4 to 6 p.m. throughout the Campus Center. The event will feature an antique photo kiosk, in which students can don clothes from another era, and “wax hands,” which invites students to dip their hands in wax to create unique sculptures, as well as music, buckets of popcorn and the carnival staple, cotton candy.

“Welcome Week activities offer students the opportunity to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones, and is a fun way for them to start their semester,” says Patrick Connelly, assistant director of student activities at the Campus Center.

Welcome Week continues on Tuesday, Jan. 30, when the semester-long Comedy Club opens with a stand-up act by Bernadette Pauley, a Boston comedian with a cynical-but-hilarious take on the world, at 8 p.m. in the Carroll Room

Jittery's Live, a performance series in the Goldstein Lounge, always draws a crowd

Wednesday, Jan. 31, a new series called "A Break From the Norm" begins at 11 a.m. with a fun workshop on making Sandy Candy, an edible form of sand art, in the TV Lounge. And on Thursday, Feb. 1, the popular performance series Jittery's Live begins with Jason Levasseur, folk-rock singer/songwriter from Nashville, Tenn., on stage in the Goldstein Lounge at 9 p.m.

Campus Center events continue through the week with a student Bingo Night on Saturday, Feb. 3, and a Superbowl Party on Sunday, Feb. 4, to catch the 6 p.m. battle between National Football League teams the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears.

The events are coordinated by the Campus Center Activities Board (CCAB), a student committee. In addition to the Welcome Back Week, the CCAB schedules events throughout the semester.
