{"id":12252,"date":"2014-12-04T09:52:31","date_gmt":"2014-12-04T13:52:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.smith.edu\/news\/?page_id=12252"},"modified":"2014-12-16T12:11:39","modified_gmt":"2014-12-16T16:11:39","slug":"students-share-holiday-fun-with-staff-faculty-and-alumnae-via-thanksgiving-match-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/news-stories\/students-share-holiday-fun-with-staff-faculty-and-alumnae-via-thanksgiving-match-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Students Share Holiday Fun With Staff, Faculty and Alumnae Via Thanksgiving Match Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Building snow figures, playing Monopoly by the fire and sampling grandmother\u2019s cornbread stuffing were among the holiday traditions Smithies and college host families shared over last week\u2019s Thanksgiving recess.<\/p>\n<p>A dozen hosts and 26 students participated in the college\u2019s fifth annual Thanksgiving Match program that brings students, faculty and staff together for a meal and some holiday fun.<\/p>\n<p>Among this year\u2019s hosts were Donna Lisker, dean of the college; Jessica Nicoll, director and chief curator for the Smith College Museum of Art; Karen Klinger, head\u00a0rowing coach; and David Bishop, HVAC systems operator for facilities management.<\/p>\n<p>About 300 Smithies remained on campus over the Thanksgiving recess\u2014many of them international students eager to experience local holiday customs.<\/p>\n<p>The match formalizes a college tradition of staff and faculty opening their homes to students. Jan Morris, administrative assistant in student affairs, says she decided to launch the program five years ago to create more opportunities for students to connect with members of the campus community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the matching part,\u201d said Morris, who has worked at Smith for 18 years. \u201cI also love hearing from people afterwards about what they did together over the holiday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In October, Morris sends out a call to students, faculty and staff interested in making a holiday match. Host families agree to provide a meal on Thanksgiving Day and transportation for their guests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program is really cool,\u201d said Bishop, whose family has hosted students for each of the past five Thanksgivings. \u201cIt\u2019s an education for us and for the students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year, Cynthia Masai and Zuliat Owoade, both juniors,\u00a0joined Bishop\u2019s family for a meal and a walk around the Tighe-Carmody Reservoir near the family\u2019s home in Southampton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students also played in the snow, which for Zuliat, was the first time,\u201d Bishop said. \u201cThey also both went up for seconds of the holiday meal, and that means a lot to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Masai said Bishop&#8217;s family was &#8220;welcoming, lovely and funny\u2014people you want to be with every minute.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The food was amazing,&#8221; added Masai, who is from Kenya<strong>.<\/strong> &#8220;For once I forgot that I was away from home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Klinger &#8217;87 said she frequently hosts Smith athletes for the holidays, but this is the first year she decided to participate in the match program. Shreya Sengupta &#8217;18, Chunying Huangdai &#8217;17 and Kyung Hyun Mhin &#8217;16 signed up to join Klinger\u2019s family and one of her rowers, Liz Sukhinenko \u201915, for Thanksgiving festivities.<\/p>\n<p>What did that entail?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students came over in time to taste things, help mash potatoes, finish setting up and eat\u2014a lot!\u201d Klinger said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12297\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12297\" style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12297 size-page_image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smith.edu\/news-stories\/gatenew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Masai2-230x165.jpg\" alt=\"Cynthia Masai '16 enjoying a nature walk over the holiday with Dave Bishiop of facilities management and his family.\" width=\"230\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/news-stories\/gatenew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Masai2-230x165.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/news-stories\/gatenew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Masai2.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12297\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cynthia Masai &#8217;16 enjoying a nature walk over the holiday with Dave Bishop of facilities management and his family.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAfter enjoying our traditional Thanksgiving food, including my grandmother\u2019s cornbread stuffing, they all played a rousing and cutthroat game of Monopoly with my 11-year-old son, John,\u201d she added. \u201cHe managed to trounce the Smithies!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jingyi Gan \u201917 said she was eager to be part of the holiday match program because \u201cI generally like to talk to people and I wanted to experience Thanksgiving in a traditional way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gan, who hails from China, said she was also looking for a chance to \u201cget in touch with people outside of school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gan and fellow sophomore Junzhou Liu were matched with Patsy Kauffman Barber, an educational consultant who attended Smith for a semester in 1992. Alumnae\u00a0Raquel Manzanares \u201908 and Maureen Mollahan AC \u201910, a philanthropic officer in the development office,\u00a0were also guests at\u00a0Kauffman Barber&#8217;s table.<\/p>\n<p>Kauffman Barber\u2019s daughters, Sophie, 8, and Casey, 10, attend the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School in Hadley and were thrilled to be able to spend time with the two students at Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<p>Her daughters were \u201ca little shy about speaking,\u201d Kauffman Barber said. \u201cBut they had a fun time just hearing about China and sharing places they knew\u00a0on the map.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The college\u2019s Thanksgiving Match program got a shoutout in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saycampuslife.com\/2014\/11\/21\/how-to-spend-thanksgiving-at-college\">recent story on saycampuslife.com<\/a> about how to spend the holiday at college.<\/p>\n<p>For information about next year\u2019s match program at Smith, contact Morris at 585-4933.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Building snow figures, playing Monopoly by the fire and sampling grandmother\u2019s cornbread stuffing were among the holiday traditions Smithies and college host families shared over last week\u2019s Thanksgiving recess.
