It must be time for the annual Julia Child Day celebration at Smith.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s culinary festivities on Thursday, Nov. 20, mark the 10th anniversary of the event honoring alumna, chef, author and television personality <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smith.edu\/events\/child_about.php\">Julia Child \u201934<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Child\u2019s passion for French cooking\u2014expressed in her authorship of a dozen cookbooks and her role as host of the long-running<em> PBS<\/em> television series <em>The French Chef<\/em>\u2014helped transform the way Americans think about food.<\/p>\n<p>Child\u2019s kitchen, which she donated to the Smithsonian Institution in 2001, is now on display in the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. That same year, Child donated her Cambridge, Mass., house to Smith. Proceeds from its sale were used to support construction of the Campus Center.<\/p>\n<p>The annual event in Child\u2019s honor is meant to capture her indomitable spirit, as well as her love of fun, culture and cuisine. (This is the woman known for such pearls as \u201cA party without cake is just a meeting\u201d and \u201cIf you\u2019re afraid of butter, use cream.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smith.edu\/events\/child.php\">Julia Child Day <\/a>was founded in 2004, the year she died at age 91. Past celebrations have included panel discussions, cooking demonstrations and special meals using Child\u2019s recipes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-page_image wp-image-11971\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smith.edu\/news-stories\/gatenew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Julia-Poster-Dayjpeg-230x297.jpg\" alt=\"Julia Poster Dayjpeg\" width=\"230\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/news-stories\/gatenew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Julia-Poster-Dayjpeg-230x297.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/news-stories\/gatenew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Julia-Poster-Dayjpeg-791x1024.jpg 791w, https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/news-stories\/gatenew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Julia-Poster-Dayjpeg-741x960.jpg 741w, https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/news-stories\/gatenew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Julia-Poster-Dayjpeg.jpg 1700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/>This year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smith.edu\/news-stories\/gatenew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/JuliaPosterDay201-Letter.pdf\">the Campus Center Caf\u00e9 will feature Child\u2019s dishes<\/a> on November 20 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lunch specials include \u201cJulia\u2019s Local Market Salad\u201d made with butternut squash and fennel, French onion soup and grilled coq au vin served on parslied potatoes.<\/p>\n<p>The Dean of the College office will host a reception from 3 to 4 p.m. on Chapin Lawn with local cheeses, cider and apples on offer. (In the event of bad weather, the reception will be held inside the Campus Center).<\/p>\n<p>From 7 to 10 p.m., a \u201cJulia in the Evening\u201d cr\u00eape bar will be on the menu in the Campus Center Caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Dinners served at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smith.edu\/diningservices\/menus.php\">campus dining locations <\/a>will also be special on Julia Child Day.<\/p>\n<p>Chapin, Morrow\/Wilson, Gillett, Cushing\/Emerson, Lamont and Hubbard will be serving \u201cBreakfast at Night,\u201d while Tyler, King\/Scales, Chase\/Duckett, Cutter\/Ziskind and Comstock\/Wilder will offer an oven-roasted turkey meal. Vegan options will be provided and menu items feature locally-produced ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>Dessert is no exception. It\u2019s Maple Valley ice cream in flavors that won the most house votes: Pumpkin, Pumpkin Oreo, Dutch Apple, Peanut Butter Cup, Oreo and Black Raspberry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coq au vin, French onion soup and\u00a0cr\u00eapes\u00a0on the menu?
