Five College Library Requests

Use the Five College Library Catalog to Request Items when...

  • The item is checked out from Smith, or is available only through another Five College Library.
  • Smith's copy is billed, missing, or on hold for another library user.
  • The item is kept in an off-site storage facility.
  • Items will be delivered to your home library.

      Who May Request

      • Smith College Borrowers - Five College delivery service is available to Smith students, faculty, staff, and Five College fellows based at Smith.
      • Five College Borrowers - Students, faculty, and staff from Amherst College, Mt. Holyoke, Hampshire College, and UMass may request items from all Smith College Libraries.

      What Can Be Requested

      • Circulating Materials - Most materials that circulate to Smith College patrons at Five College Libraries may be requested for delivery to Smith using the "Request Item" function in the Five College Catalog. Five College borrowers may request items from all Smith College Libraries for delivery to their home library.
      • Non-Circulating Materials - Reference, periodicals, and selected other materials do not circulate, and therefore cannot be requested. Some Josten Library materials, such as scores, may be borrowed in person, but not requested online.

      How to Request

      • Connect to the Five College Library Catalog, and search for the item of interest.
      • On the record for that item, click on the Request Item button at the top of the screen.
      • On the Five College Library login screen, select your home institution and enter your username and password.
      • Use My Account/Renew in the Five College Library Catalog to check the status of your requests.

      Delivery Information

      • Delivery Time - Deliveries are made Monday through Friday and requests are usually filled by the next working day. You'll receive an email notice when item(s) are available for pick up. If the item you've requested is checked out, the library system will recall the item from the other patron. This process takes up to two weeks.
      • Pickup - Pickup is at Young Library for Smith patrons, and at the home library for Five College patrons. You will be notified when the item is ready for pick up, or check at the circulation desk in 48 hours.
