Study Carrels & Shelves

Young Library Study Carrels & Personal Reserve Shelves

Carrels and Study Pods

The 10 Young carrels and cubicles are available to all users for individual study on a first-come, first-served basis. Carrels and cubicles cannot be reserved.

Personal Shelf Reserves

  • Smith College students may request the use of a “personal shelf” to store books for extended research use.
  • Sign up for a shelf in person at the Young Library Service Desk. A Smith ID is required to reserve a shelf.
  • Personal shelves are reserved are for the entire academic year and must be renewed at the beginning of each academic year. SSW students may sign up for a shelf for the summer semester.

Circulation

  • All books placed on personal shelves must be checked out at the Young Library service desk and remain your responsibility until they are checked back in.
  • Items that are not checked out, and thus stamped with a current due date, will be removed and returned to the stacks. If you renew shelf reserve items, record the new due date on the date-due slip.

Hillyer Art Library Study Carrels & Personal Reserve Shelves

Carrels

The 35 Hillyer carrels are available to all users for individual study on a first-come, first-served basis. Carrels cannot be reserved.

Personal Shelf Reserves

  • Smith College students may request the use of a “personal shelf” to store books from the Hillyer Art Library collection for extended research use. Personal items and materials from other libraries may not be stored on personal shelves.
  • Contact Lisa DeCarolis, the Hillyer Circulation Coordinator, to sign up for a shelf. A Smith ID is required to reserve a shelf.
  • Personal shelves are reserved are for the entire semester and must be renewed at the beginning of each semester.

Circulation

  • All items placed on personal shelves must be checked out at the Hillyer Art Library service desk.
  • When an item is checked out, art library staff will flag it with a colored streamer. This streamer must be kept in the item until it is returned to the service desk.
  • Items that do not have colored streamers will be removed from shelves and returned to the stacks.
  • Items on loan to shelves may be recalled for reserve or use by other patrons. Personal shelf patrons will receive email notification of the new due date.

Loan Periods

  • Books are loaned to personal shelves for one semester.
  • Bound periodicals cannot be loaned to personal shelves.
  • Current periodicals cannot be loaned to personal shelves.
  • Materials from other libraries cannot be loaned to or stored on personal shelves.
