PULSE SECURE (VPN) PROTECTED BY DUO
Duo has been added to the Pulse Secure login for additional security. The instructions below are for both Mac and Windows users after you have initially connected with your Smith username and password. Mobile users will have no problem following the Duo screen prompts.
The Secondary Password field is to tell Duo how you will authenticate. Enter one of the following words: push, phone1 or enter a passcode. Explanation of each is listed below.
Note: MacBook Touch ID and the Security Key do not work with Pulse Secure.
push: If your primary device for Duo is your mobile phone and you have the Duo Mobile app installed, enter the word push in the Secondary Password field, then click Connect. Your mobile phone will receive the normal Duo push. Review the request on your phone and tap Approve. Your secure connection to the Smith VPN will then be completed.
phone1: In the Secondary Password field, enter the word phone1, then click Connect. Your primary phone will ring. (In most cases this will be your mobile phone but it could be your home or office phone.) To complete the connection, answer the call and press any key on the phone’s keypad. Your secure connection to the Smith VPN will then be completed.
Note: If you have a backup phone listed in Duo as a device, enter phone2 or phone3 and your backup phone number will ring when you click Connect. Remember, to complete the connection, press any key on the phone’s keypad.
passcode: Instead of a word, enter a generated passcode (number) in the Secondary Password field. A passcode can come from the Duo Mobile app on your phone or a list of passcodes sent to you in a text message.
- From your phone, open the Duo Mobile app, then click the drop-down arrow on the “Duo-Protected Smith College” line. A 6-digit passcode will display. Enter that passcode in the Secondary Password field, then click Connect. Your secure connection to the Smith VPN will then be completed.
- sms: To get a new batch of single-use passcodes texted to your mobile phone, enter sms in the Secondary Password field, then click Connect. A batch of 5 passcodes will be texted to your phone. A Duo with Pulse error message window will display, “Credentials were invalid. Please try again.” Click OK to dismiss the error message and the Secondary Password window will appear again. Enter the first passcode in the batch, then click Connect. Your secure connection to the Smith VPN will then be completed. Note: Each passcode can be used only once. The next time you attempt to connect using the sms command, Duo requires the next unused code in the batch to be entered. For example, enter the code beginning with ‘2’ if you previously used the code beginning with ‘1’.
