Chemistry Learning Outcomes

    • IR attended Chemistry departmental retreat to define learning goals
    • Additional departmental meetings to design an assessment that will help test overarching learning outcomes in a chemistry-specific context that addresses some content

  • Assessment Design

    • pHunger Games-2012 Pilot
      • Competition between teams of 3-4 seniors
      • Task: review a journal article that is a real article, edited to introduce shortcomings (missing data, misinterpretation)
      • 1 hour of individual work, sealed for later evaluation
      • 1 hour of initial group work, notes written up for evaluation
      • Meeting with faculty adviser for midpoint check-in
      • 2 hours of group work, preparation of final review
      • 1.5 hours of faculty evaluation of final product to determine winning team
      • Announcement of awards, student/faculty celebration
      • Token participation prize for all participants
      • ~$100 prize to each member of winning team
      • Key selling point: “We could give you a test. Or. . . “
