Night Blooming Cactus!

July 12, 2017

Selenicereus wittii also called Moonlight Cactus is an epiphytic cactus native to the Amazon. This unusual plant climbs by wrapping its flattened, leaf-like, stems around tree trunks. Adding to its unusual nature is the fact that this cactus lives in a water rich environment.  The seeds of this plant contain air chambers and are water dispersed.
You have to be lucky to catch one of its flowers, as they only bloom once, and only at night. As soon as the sun comes up, the show is over.

This plant lives in the Stove House.
