Thunia alba – The White Thunia

Thunia alba  is one of around six species in the genus Thunia. Orchids in this genus are from the seasonally dry, tropical forests of northern India, Myanmar, Thailand & China. These deciduous, terrestrial orchids wake up in late March & grow explosively until flowering in June-July.

During their dormant leafless phase (our winter, their dry season), the Thunias in the Botanic Garden collection, are moved to the Cool Genetics House and are  kept dry to mimic their natural cycle.

As they get closer to blooming, they are moved to the Camellia Corridor. Currently, while in full bloom, they are putting on a welcoming display in the Physiology House!
