Blooming orchid!

Dendrobium alexandre
December 5, 2017

Dendrobium alexandrae, Alexandra's Dragon Orchid, is a large flowered species, native to New Guinea. This orchid is an epiphyte, as is true for most Dendrobium species, growing on high branches of trees in  lower montane forests. The genus name is derived from  the Greek words dendron, "tree" and bios, "life". Epiphytes are not parasitic, they use other plants only for support.
This plant can be seen in the Stove House, home to orchids, bromeliads, aquatic and carnivorous plants!
