Musa × paradisiaca, edible banana, French plantain, is blooming in the Palm House.

The banana is native to hot and humid forests from India to the Solomon Islands. The banana plant is an herb, not a tree. The stalk, made up of overlapping leaf sheaths, is called a pseudostem.
Bananas are easy to grow. They do not need to be replanted each season and produce fruit continuously. This makes the plant popular with farmers.
