Julio Alves is Director of the Jacobson Center for Writing, Teaching and Learning and a lecturer in the English Department, where he teaches introductory writing courses. He is Smith's specialist in English as a second language. He has a BA in comparative literature and linguistics from Boston University and a PhD in linguistics also from Boston University. His research and publications are in the areas of linguistics, anthropology, and cultural studies, with an emphasis on the study of children's narratives. Before coming to Smith, he taught linguistics and writing at Boston University and at the University of Southern California. He has also had a lifelong interest in African studies. He spent two years as a fellow in the Center for African Studies at Boston University and has done Fulbright-funded field studies in Swahili in Kenya.
